The Social Classes
Divergente, Veronica Roth
Summary:
The movie takes place in future Chicago. In a close future, in a dystopian world, the people are divided into 5 social classes: Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). At the age of sixteen, all teenagers must choose their faction, the one in they were born, or another one, as a result of which they won’t see their parents anymore. The hero, Beatrice cannot chosoe one faction: the test which is supposed to tell her which faction is better for her is not working. Her mind is focused on three factions, not only one: she is Divergent, she doesn’t belong to one class.
Critique:
This book deals with the social classes issues, and as it is a young adult novel, it shows that this issue is everybody's concern.
The comparison to social classes is here made through factions. The rich are compared to the Erudite faction, they have the intelligence. The poor are compared to the Abnegation faction. And the people who don’t belong in one faction, the one Who Don’t Know Where Are Their Place, are Factionless, they are out of the society.
The fact that everyone who is different from what is expected becomes a Factionless, make the reader think about the meaning of our society. A comparison is implied.
The comparison with Karl Mark's theory is obvious, as there is a struggle between the different faction to obtain the power of the government.
